Carly’s python leather pumps are from Italian luxury design label Sergio Rossi, which is very popular among Hollywood actresses. Therefore, the pricy shoe and fashion brand image fit Carly’s stylish businesswoman role, and illustrates actually how modern and trendy she is.
An even more interesting fact is the so-called
Godiva shoe model that Carly wears. To understand the full relevance of the heels for Carly’s character and situation, it’s important to know this old European legend – and here is why.
Godiva shoe is a reference to Lady Godiva, an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman in the 11th century who felt pity for the people in British Coventry because of the high taxes that they had to pay.
She tried to help these folks and argued with her husband, the Earl of Mercia, who caused the fraudulent payments, but with no immediate success.
However, Lady Godiva’s aristocratic husband promised her that he would revoke the high taxes if she would ride naked on a horse through the village.
And while the Earl of Mercia never expected that she would agree to do the embarrassing challenge, Lady Godiva simply rode naked on a horse through the town.
Impressed by her courage, the Earl of Mercia relieved the residents of the high taxes, and Lady Godiva has been honored as a saint by the folk since then.
But what has this historic legend to do with Carly?
Actually, Lady Godiva’s story can be compared to Carly, because she also feels pity for the people – here Kate, the betrayed naive housewife.
In fact, Carly starts with a clever plan to help Kate by dressing sexy, and then by taking off her clothes and literally getting naked to take revenge on the cheater Mark, who also betrayed her. Literally, because Carly – the ice-cool lawyer – shows for the first time her real emotions and that she has a loving heart.
Furthermore, Carly is also – metaphorically speaking – ‘honored as a saint’ by Amber and Kate, for her courage and heroic fight, when Carly finally defeats Mark over the injustice that he causes.
Of course, it’s very bold to associate Lady Godiva with Carly because of her
Godiva heels, but it sounds like an interesting theory.
Another interesting detail is the leather print of Carly’s pumps, because a python is a snake that kills its victims slowly and silently. In fact, this sounds again like a great metaphor for Carly’s sneaky plan to destroy Mark’s life in a final revenge.
Sure, both interpretations sound bold, because it’s not documented that costume designers Patricia Field and Paolo Nieddu really had these associations in mind when choosing these pumps for Carly.
Nevertheless, it sounds like a reasonable assumption.
